. The flex cable, and others like it from brands such as JCID, are designed to work with a programmer or on their own to calibrate battery data.
For the iPhone 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max, there are two main types of repair flex cables available:
1. External/Tag-on flex cables
These cables are the more common type for DIY repair, and some brands like YF offer “no-programming” versions.
- Process: The external flex cable is typically soldered to the Battery Management System (BMS) board from the original battery, which is then reconnected to the logic board.
- Result: It can remove the “Non-Genuine Battery” warning, correct the battery health percentage to 100%, and reset the cycle count.
- Compatibility: Compatible flex cables are available for the iPhone 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max.
2. Built-in flex cables
This method is used by professional technicians who want to achieve a “traceless” repair, meaning there is no visible external flex cable.
- Process: This is a much more difficult repair that involves installing the flex cable internally. It requires professional skills to transfer the BMS board and install the internal flex without damaging the phone.
- Compatibility: Compatible built-in flex cables are also available for the mentioned iPhone models.
Why repair flex cables are used
Apple’s software prevents unofficial third-party battery repairs from displaying battery health information correctly. Even a genuine battery that is not factory-paired with the device will show a warning and a non-functional health reading. Repair flex cables are used to:
- Bypass the battery warning message.
- Modify battery data (health and cycle count).
- Restore the accurate display of battery health percentage.
Important considerations
- Requires specialized tools: In most cases (except with “no-programming” flex cables), a programmer such as a JCID V1S or V1SE is required to read and write the battery data.
