Description

JCID Face ID Tag On for Iphone X

A JCID Face ID “Tag On” repair for an iPhone X is solder-free method for fixing Face ID failures by attaching a small flexible printed circuit (FPC) cable. This repair is performed using a JCID programmer, such as the V1S, V1SE, or V1S Pro, and bypasses the need for delicate and difficult optical component repairs.

Required tools and equipment

  • JCID Programmer: A V1SE or V1S Pro programmer is necessary to read and write Face ID data.
  • JCID Face ID Dot Matrix Repair Board: An adapter board for the programmer that allows the Face ID data to be read and written.
  • JCID Tag On Face ID FPC Cable for iPhone X: This is the small flex cable that you will “tag on” to the original Face ID component.
  • Standard phone repair tools: A pentalobe screwdriver, tri-point screwdriver, and other tools to safely open the iPhone X and remove the screen and front camera assembly.

The Face ID tag-on repair process

1. Read the original data
  • First, disassemble the iPhone X and remove the screen and front camera assembly.
  • Connect the JCID programmer to a power source and a computer running the JCID Repair software.
  • Connect the original Face ID dot projector flex cable to the appropriate port on the JCID programmer’s adapter board.
  • Use the software to read and back up the original Face ID data from the projector.
2. Write the data to the new flex
  • Disconnect the original flex cable from the programmer.
  • Connect the new JCID Face ID tag-on FPC cable to the programmer’s adapter board.
  • In the JCID software, write the backed-up data onto the new tag-on cable. The software will confirm when the write is successful.
3. Install the tag-on flex
  • Disconnect the new tag-on flex from the programmer.
  • Carefully “tag on” the new FPC cable to the original Face ID dot projector flex cable. The cables are designed to connect to one another without soldering.
  • Ensure the connection is secure.
4. Reassemble and test
  • Reconnect the front camera assembly to the phone’s logic board, and reinstall the battery and screen.
  • Power on the phone and check the Face ID function. It should now be working normally.

Advantages and limitations of this method

Advantages
  • No soldering: Avoids the difficult and risky process of soldering a new IC chip, which can cause damage to the sensitive Face ID components.
  • Non-removal of optical components: This process does not require disassembly of the original TrueDepth camera module, which maintains factory alignment.
  • Faster and easier: Significantly simplifies and accelerates the Face ID repair process, making it accessible to technicians with less experience.
Limitations
  • Not a universal fix: It cannot repair all Face ID issues, especially those caused by damage to the flood illuminator or if the original dot projector chip was fused.
  • Hardware and software required: Requires a specific JCID programmer and adapter board, making it unsuitable for a DIY repair without the proper equipment.
  • One-time programmable: The FPC cable can typically only be written to a limited number of times, so the process must be performed correctly.
