. This method is designed to fix the Face ID function without needing to solder the tiny components of the dot matrix projector.
Required equipment
To perform the repair, you will need the following tools:
- JCID Non-Removal Face ID Repair FPC Flex Cable: A special “tag-on” flex cable specifically for the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This is the new component that will be installed into the phone.
- JCID V1S, V1SE, or V1S Pro Programmer: A programmer tool is necessary to read and write Face ID data. The V1SE and V1S Pro are the more recent versions of the tool.
- JCID Dot Matrix Activation/Read-Write Board: An adapter board that connects to the V1S/SE/Pro programmer. It provides the necessary interface for working with the original and replacement Face ID components.
Step-by-step repair process
This procedure is for experienced technicians, as it involves opening the phone and handling sensitive components.
- Read and back up original data:
- Open the iPhone and carefully disconnect the Face ID module.
- Connect the original Face ID module to the JCID Dot Matrix Activation Board, which is attached to your JCID V1S/SE/Pro programmer.
- Use the programmer to read and save the encrypted dot matrix data from the original flex cable.
- Write data to the new flex cable:
- Connect the new JCID “Tag-On” Face ID flex cable to the programmer.
- Use the programmer to write the saved data onto the new flex cable.
- Activate the new flex cable:
- With the new flex cable still connected to the programmer, perform an activation to finalize the data transfer.
- Install the new “Tag-On” flex:
- Important: For the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max, you must cut a small positioning plate from the metal shield before installation.
- Connect the new “Tag-On” flex cable to the socket of the original Face ID assembly.
- Carefully fold and secure the flex cable. Because this is a “non-removal” or “tag-on” solution, you are adding the new flex to the existing hardware rather than replacing the original dot projector.
- Reassemble and test:
- Reassemble the iPhone.
- Test Face ID by navigating to Settings > Face ID & Passcode. You should be able to set up Face ID as normal.
