used to fix software-related battery issues after a replacement. These “boosting” or “tag-on” flex cables do not physically increase the battery’s capacity but are used to reset battery data in the phone’s software to eliminate warnings about a “non-genuine” battery.
How YF battery flex cables work
When you replace an iPhone battery with a non-Apple part, Apple’s software generates an “Important Battery Message” and an inability to display the battery’s maximum capacity. To resolve this, repair technicians use a process that involves the YF flex cable:
- The Battery Management System (BMS) board from the original battery is transferred to the new, replacement battery.
- A specialized programmer is used to transfer the original battery data (cycle count, health percentage, etc.) to the YF repair flex cable.
- The YF flex cable is then installed, which allows the phone to read the modified data and display 100% battery health and 0 cycle counts.
Some versions of the flex cables are “pre-programmed” and do not require a separate programmer to reset the data.
Features and use
- Fixes software warnings: The main purpose of the flex cable is to solve the software issues that arise from non-genuine battery replacements.
- Requires expertise: While the process can be done, it requires technical skill to transfer the BMS board and use the programming tool correctly.
- Two installation methods:
- Tag-on (external): A simpler, but often visible, method.
- Built-in (internal): A more difficult, “traceless” repair that requires a high level of technical skill.
- Restores data display: After the repair, the iPhone’s Settings will display 100% battery health and reset cycle counts, making the replacement battery appear “new” to the software.
